The Atmosphere

There's Nothing Like watching a movie in the movie theater.  The Popcorn, the big buckets of soda, and the massive amounts of movie theater butter.

I hardly ever went to a movie when I was a kid.  And, if my dad and I ever went to a movie, we didn't grab refreshments.  But since I graduated high school and decided to indulge a little, popcorn with extra butter and a large cola (now cherry cola) has become a tradition.

It was only when I began working at a movie theater though and got to see movies for free with free popcorn and soda that it became an addiction.

Although I don't have the money to see the big screen much anymore, this is  list of the movies now playing or coming out soon that I would love to see in the theater.

Movies Now Playing

  • Alvin & The Chipmunks - My girlfriend and I  grew up watching the chipmunks so I'd really like to see their take on it now.  My girlfriend's daughter also gets a kick out of how cute they look and sound.  We can't stop repeating that "Bow chica wow wow chica wow wow" line even though it's kind of silly just because it's so catchy.
  • Enchanted - After seeing the the real life rats helping that cartoon-turned reality princess clean a bathroom I just have to see it for the twisted sick comedy factor right there.
  • Beowulf - I heard that this movie was awesome.  It just so happens to be in 3D at the Carmike Cinema right now.  I've never seen a 3d movie, and this would be the best type of movie to see in 3D.

Movies Soon to Come

  • The Water Horse - This movie looks cute.  Plus, I've always been a fan of the Plesiosaurus and the idea of them existing somewhere in deep waters today.

  • Fred Clause - Besides liking movies about Santa Clause, I also have to see this movie because it's a family comedy.  And a family comedy involving Santa Clause has got to be hilarious.

My Hopes for the Future
 of Movie Theaters

When I was working at a movie theater in Colorado I learned that, according to contracts with Hollywood, the theater would receive a movie in four or five part canisters of film.  The Projectionist (me and a friend  at the time) would splice the 4 or 5 parts of the film together into a single large film and place it a platter to be played.  After the movie has been played for the allotted time, the movie is then taken apart and sent back to Hollywood.

What I think should take place in the future is that movie theaters should replace their movie screens with LCD or Plasma screens.  Then the movies should be sent digitally to a special player which can play on the Plasma or LCD screens.  These movies should have a read only code and a code to erase the movie when a specific command is sent from the associated studio which can be tailored to the movie. The routers connecting the special players should be password protected and only connect  to and accept commands only from movie studios that have an accepted digital certificate.  Other controls can be built in, but the above is a good beginning thought.

With this system, Hollywood can save delivery costs.  Hollywood can also save duplication costs since they have to reproduce a whole movie on film which takes up 4 to 5 canisters per movie to begin with.  By using sending the movie digitally, they could only have to make two copies (one for backup) and another with a termination code to the various movie theaters that have contracted with the movie studio.  And copying a digital format once and the associated costs  are less expensive than copying the movie multiple times on film for the various movie theaters in the country.
